And I'm powering the ESP8266 from a 3.3V source on an Arduino clone, not a nano. I followed espduino's wiring diagram, with the exception that I'm not using a level shifter b/c my USB-UART adapters have 3.3V jumper (verified at 3.3V). The WiFi Link firmware is an ESP8266 arduino sketch developed by in Arduino IDE using Arduino esp8266 core. It comes in the familiar Arduino Shield shape, and should work with any similarly-sized Arduino. I've gone through the wiring a few times (but that's not saying that I got it right). The ESP8266 WiFi Shield finds a middle ground between the Module and the Thing - it comes pre-flashed with an AT-command firmware, so it can be controlled by any UART, but it also breaks out and provides command access to all of the ESP8266s I/O. I have never loaded any firmware on an ESP8266. Might've loaded the driver at some point in the pass, since I've used it for other Arduino stuff.

On the Pi, it recognized both adapter right away. FTDI232 from ebay and Sparkfun's FTDI232RL. I've tried two different USB-UART adapters.
